A mere 30 seconds walk from the office block in which I found myself
yesterday and I was standing opposite Hacky's Wine Bar. Hacky's has
not really kept up with the times. The front of the building offers
us two telephone numbers - one prefixed 01 and one prefixed 081. Both
long superceded by 0208 during the back end of the last century. I was
tempted to wander in for a cocktail, or similar, but no. Overall-clad
tradesmen visible through the plate glass windows and handwritten scrawl
on a small piece of papaer sellotaped to said window confirmed that
Hacky's was closed and that in its place a "Thai restaurant"
would be "open soon." How soon wasn't clear and whether it
will remain Hacky's Wine Bar was also unclear (but, I guess, unlikely).
Before long Hacky's Wine Bar may be no more, the I, Ludicrous
song being the only reminder of the goings on at 13-17 Station Rd.,
Croydon.
And what of Hacky? He was last seen running a betting shop.
