I, Ludicrous Featuring Sunday Lunch at the GeldofsNo cat October 1985 (demo cassette)
What the papers say: |
|
Making Music - April 1986Four gripping, post-harmonic modernist songs, stripped of the tired old cliches of traditional 'singing', and soothed by the measured tones of the spoken voice. In a style that owes much to the Velvet Undrground's 'The Gift', Will Hun (sic) recites his stories and essays over the playing of colleague Stein Stern. 'Sunday Lunch With the Geldofs' is a subtly surreal deadpan narrative of lunch with Bob and Paula ("Bob carves marvellously"), intoned over an Eno-esque Casio backing track. Distorted drums and aggressive synthesised percussion set the tone for 'Sex', a plea for celibacy: "Sex, what a let-down...the smell is appalling". 'Ludicrous' begins as a diatribe against the word itself, but soon deteriorates into a list of items that qualify for the description. The final track, 'M25', sounds like a news report on the pros and cons of London's orbital motorway, read over a groaning distorted guitar which booms monstrously in the background. This tape was rather inepertly recorded on a Fostex X-15. The vocals are cool and oblique in spite of the cheap echo ladled all over them, but the instrumental compliments rather than distracts. With a better production, I, Ludicrous could have an indie success on their hands. Return to Top Return to Discography Return to Homepage |
